Vote Elia for #1 NUS Delegate
Hi, I’m Elia (they/them) and I studied Natural Sciences at Clare College. I’m currently your SU Disabled Students Officer. As one of your sabbatical officers, understanding and tackling the issues students face is something I’m passionate about and I will ensure Cambridge students' views are represented at the NUS Conference.Prior to being DSO, I was President of the SU LGBT+ Campaign, a member of the NHS Youth Forum, represented BME disabled students on SU Campaigns, and was on the Student Minds Cambridge committee.
My Priorites
A Democratic and Transparent NUS
Students deserve an NUS in which their voices matter. The NUS needs to:
Ensure the conclusions of its antisemitism investigation are well communicated.
Address the concerns raised in the process of the investigation.
Enable better democracy in its running.
Update on previously passed policy that has seemingly gone nowhere.
The Cost of Being a Student
There should be no financial barriers to education. The NUS should:
Continue campaigns for financing and rent reforms.
Oppose attempts to raise tuition fees and the marketisation of education.
Campaign for postgraduate and international students to stop being used to prop up the finances of universities and other educational institutions.
Addressing Inequalities and Discrimination
Discrimination, inequality and their sources need to be addressed. Students need:
More action on the awarding gaps faced by Black and disabled students.
Continued opposition to policies rooted in racism like the Prevent duty.
Consistent and transparent reporting procedures.
Student Support
Students should feel safe and supported. We need:
Well-funded mental health provisions in universities and in the NHS.
Reduced evidence requirements or quick and free access to the diagnoses often needed for reasonable adjustments and Disabled Students’ Allowance.
Better support for LGBT+ students, both materially and through policy
